LONDON (Reuters) - Who wants to live forever? Some flatworms do, even if it means no sex.

British scientists have found that a species of flatworm can overcome the process of ageing to become potentially immortal and say their work sheds light on possibilities of alleviating ageing and age-related characteristics in human cells.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal on Monday the researchers found that the flatworms, known as planarian worms, can continuously maintain the length of a crucial part of their DNA, known as telomeres, during regeneration.

"Our data satisfy one of the predictions about what it would take for an animal to be potentially immortal," said Aziz Aboobaker, who led the research at Britain's University of Nottingham. "The next goals for us are to understand the mechanisms in more detail and to understand more about how you evolve an immortal animal."

Planarian worms have long fascinated scientists because they have an extraordinary ability to regenerate. A planarian worm split lengthwise or crosswise will regenerate into two separate living worms.

Aboobaker's team studied two types of planarian - those that reproduce sexually, like humans, and those that reproduce asexually by simply dividing in two.

Both types appear to regenerate indefinitely by growing new muscles, skin, guts and even entire brains again and again, Aboobaker explained in a statement about the work, but the asexual ones also renew their stocks of a key enzyme which may mean they can be immortal.

Scientists know that one of the key factors associated with ageing cells is telomere length. Telomeres are sections of DNA that cap the ends of chromosomes, protecting them from damage and the loss of cell functions linked to ageing. Shorter telomeres are thought to be an indicator of faster ageing.

Previous research -- which won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2009 -- has shown that telomeres can be maintained by the activity of an enzyme called telomerase.

In most sexually reproducing organisms the enzyme is most active during early development, but Aboobaker's team found that in the asexual worms, the planarian version of the enzyme is dramatically increased during regeneration - a factor that allows stem cells to maintain their telomeres as they divide to replace missing tissues.

Douglas Kell, chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council which part-funded the study, described the finding as "exciting" and said it "contributes significantly to our fundamental understanding of some of the processes involved in ageing."

The work also "builds strong foundations for improving health and potentially longevity in other organisms, including humans," he said in a statement.

Still wondering if Mountain View's Google Drive service will launch as a Google Docs rebranding? The folks at the Google Operating System blog have some code you might want to peek at, then. Apparently the Docs' source code mentions an SDK connected to the upcoming Google Drive, opening the door for third party app support. The code hints at deeper Gmail integration too, "Say goodbye to email attachments and hello to real time collaboration," it says, "Drag anything shared with you to My Drive for easy access." If Drive turns out to be more than a hefty Docs update, at the very least it seems clear that the new service will play nice with El Goog's other web apps -- after all, isn't that what that consolidated privacy policy is supposed to be about?

Infusing the arts within daily lessons is something Windsor Hill Elementary does well. Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary, a pre-k through fifth grade school, implemented arts infusion five years ago, which involves the creative problem solving process. Principal Vernisa Bodison

says, "We really want our students to be critical thinkers. We want them to think analytically, so what we do is we embed art infused opportunities that they have to problem solve. It really requires them to exercise and use their higher order thinking skills and that's what we want, we want our children to be thinkers."

Teachers create lessons in their art discipline to infuse, or integrate... classroom lessons which includes drama, dance, vocal and instrumental music. Drama teacher, Kathy Summer says, "I'm teaching cause and effect. I'm teaching African American History, while I'm also doing drama, and teachers are wonderful at that in their classrooms. We make the learning, everything that we're suppose to learn here at Windsor Hill of our responsibility, and that's the beauty of it. When you walk in the door, you don't even know who the drama teacher is, and who the social studies teacher is."

So what makes Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary School so cool? Fifth grade student Hope Chambers says, "I think that it's actually quite fun." Fifth grade student Isaiah White says, "It's better to me than sitting in a classroom and just learning it ordinarily and not understanding it, if you go to a special area that involves the arts in learning that makes it more fun." Principal Vernisa Bodison says, "It's beautiful. It's a beautiful place, warm and loving environment. We have a culture of high expectations, and we're expecting great things from our students." Fourth grade student Cesar Palomar says, "It is very fascinating and it has a lot of stuff for the arts." Teacher Nathan Nelson says, "Arts infusion makes a whole new world for these students. Some students will never have the opportunity to afford piano lessons or to afford music lessons, or dance, and Windsor Hill gives them that opportunity throughout their work day and that's a blessing to many. It's a special school. Number one, the students that we serve here, the parents that we serve and our faculty and staff have a heart to teach, and have a heart and passion for these children in learning.

Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary School has four computer labs. The school also has a boys empowerment group, African drummers, girl's step team, as well as a Lego robotics team and recycling troopers.

Gabe Watson, Alleged Honeymoon Killer, Accused of Lies Surrounding Tina Thomas' Death

Gabe Watson, the accused Honeymoon Killer, is on trial for the death of his wife, and the details surrounding her drowning are being called into question.

An experienced diver who was there when Tina Thomas Watson died cast doubt on his version of what happened off Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 2003.

Dr. Doug Milsap testified for the prosecution that Watson told him two stories about how Tina Thomas died that fateful day, neither of which he believed.

In one version of events from that day, Milsap recalled, Watson told him that his wife panicked, knocked off his mask, making him unable to help her.

In another, he was holding her, but she was too heavy to carry to the surface.

The tale simply wasn't plausible to Milsap, because underwater, a human being's weight is almost negligible - the equivalent of just 10 to 20 pounds.

"I got angry - like I feel now - and said, that's bulls---," Milsap said, according to The Courier Mail. "I tend not to have much tact, I tell it like it is."

Prosecutors argue that Gabe Watson, a 36-year-old salesman, who married his wife 10 days earlier, planned her death to cash in on her life insurance.

The Alabama man served 18 months in an Australian prison for manslaughter. If convicted in a Birmingham courtroom, he faces life behind bars.

To preempt a possible move by the defense, prosecutors aired a taped deposition of Tina Thomas' doctor about a heart condition she had in 2001.

Tina had a procedure two years before she died to correct an irregular heartbeat. Dr. Farrell Mendelsohn testified that he considered her cured.

The defense contends that Tina's death was accidental and perhaps was gearing up to argue that her medical history put her at risk in diving.
