Kicksend Releases An Android App For Sharing All Your Photos, Videos, and More

Last December, file-sharing startup Kicksend went mobile, with an iPhone app designed to enable easy sharing of photos and videos that are captured from your mobile device. Now, six months later, the startup is taking that same functionality and making it available to Android users as well. Kicksend, which was incubated as part of the Y Combinator Summer 2011 class, aims to make file-sharing easy, with a way to share and access photos, videos, and other large files across multiple platforms. The startup has a web application at kicksend.com that lets users connect to all their files online. It also has access through a desktop app for Mac users, and an app for iPhone users as well. And now it'll be available on Android as well.

By calling it "Deadliest Catch," Discovery was obviously setting up audiences for some serious drama from the cast of its reality show about Alaskan king crabbing boats and their crews. But after revelations of drug usage and the shocking deaths of the captain and a new deckhand, it seemed like this show might have more drama than it could handle.?

Nope -- last night's show proved there's still plenty to offer from the high seas, as the episode picked up where it left off last week with harrowing footage of Wizard crew member Chris Scambler, who suddenly fell ill. The greenhorn had been struck down with shooting pains in his neck and arms, which quickly turned into convulsions. Without a doctor on the boat, he had to be airlifted by the Coast Guard to take him to an Alaskan hospital.

The story was reported last year by AP, but at the time the crewmember was not identified. The clip above reveals?that Scambler was the 28-year-old crewman referred to in the original story. Scrambler was reported to be suffering from dehydration and shock, and was eventually moved to Anchorage and stabilized.?

"I'm sorry," Chris said as he was being prepped for removal.?

"Don't be sorry, man, you did a great job for me," Capt. Keith Colburn told him. "All right?"

Ore. track coach takes student to prom, loses job

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) ? The daughter-in-law of Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman has been dismissed as a volunteer track coach at a small Eastern Oregon high school because she escorted a 17-year-old boy to the prom.

Melissa Bowerman, 41, who had been coaching the Condon/Wheeler track and field team with her 73-year-old husband, Jon Bowerman, was ousted this month in a phone call from school officials.

"We started an investigation that led to us asking her to un-volunteer," Condon Superintendent Jan Zarate said. He declined to elaborate.

Melissa Bowerman said she went to last month's Condon High School prom with a boy from the track team because the boy felt bad about not having a date and had been struggling in English class.

"If they go on (academic) probation and suspension, then they can't go to the track meets," said Melissa Bowerman, who also has a son on the track team. "I said, 'OK, I will go with you, but we've got to talk about English first. You're going to do better in English."

Melissa Bowerman says attending the prom was an error in judgment, but she maintains she did not have an inappropriate relationship with the teen.

She said the two danced to a few slow songs but mostly played ping pong and foosball at the prom, the East Oregonian newspaper of Pendleton reported (http://is.gd/pBVR6a ).

Gilliam County Sheriff Gary Bettencourt, who received a complaint from a chaperone, said he has found no evidence that Melissa Bowerman broke the law.

The boy's father, meanwhile, said he gave Melissa Bowerman permission to take his son to the dance.

"The first thing I thought, 'Maybe this isn't a good idea.' But Melissa has been like a surrogate mom to these kids for years," Bob Thomas said.

Melissa Bowerman's late father-in-law is well-known among Oregon sports fans. Besides inventing the waffle-soled running shoe and co-founding Nike with Phil Knight, Bill Bowerman coached track at the University of Oregon from 1949 to 1972, winning four national titles. His relationship with track great Steve Prefontaine has been featured in two films.

The Condon/Wheeler track and field program has ballooned from six athletes to more than 30 in just four years under Melissa and Jon Bowermans' watch, and the girls' team won its first state title Saturday.

As the team prepared to depart for the state track meet last week, Condon athletic director Ron Kopp told the Bowermans that Melissa would not be allowed to ride on the team's charter bus with the athletes. With the bus only half full, parents have historically accompanied their sons and daughters for the ride.

Jon Bowerman said he might resign because of the situation, and possibly sell his family's ranch near Fossil.

"The only thing we've done wrong is build them a new track and get uniforms and build them a powerhouse program," he said. "If she doesn't come back, I'm not coming back."

Report: Amazon planning front-lit Kindle e-reader for July, new tablet later this year

Certainly it's no great shocker that Amazon's got plans for a new e-reader and tablet later this year. Nor should anyone be particularly surprised at the prospect of a front-lit reader from the retail giant set to compete directly with the latest Nook offering. Reuters, however, claims to have some insight into both, courtesy of an anonymous source. Apparently the aforementioned reader is set for a July launch, arriving in the customary Wifi and 3G varieties. The tablet, meanwhile, is set for a release "closer to the holiday season," according to the source. Amazon, E Ink and the like naturally refused to comment on the matter.

Sign language translator turns gestures into spoken letters, makes for a better world (video)

By far one of the greatest challenges of sign language has been to translate it for everyday folk that wouldn't know where to begin a conversation with the deaf. Cornell University engineering students Ranjay Krishna, Seonwoo Lee and Si Ping Wang -- along with some help from Jonathan Lang -- used their final project time this past semester to close this gap in one of the more practical solutions we've seen to date. Their prototype glove uses accelerometers, contact sensors and flex sensors to translate complex finger gestures from the American Sign Language alphabet into spoken letters: after converting hand positions to digital signals, the test unit both speaks out the resulting letters and sends them to a computer, where they can be used for anything from a game (shown in the video below) to, presumably, constructing whole sentences. Along with being accurate, the Cornell work is even designed with a mind towards how it would work in the real world, as the glove and its transmitter are both wireless and powered by 9-volt batteries. We hope that the project leads to a real product and an extra bridge between the deaf and the rest of us, but in the meantime, we'll be happy that at least one form of powered glove is being put to the noblest use possible.

Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro USB Flash Drive (64GB)

Design
The Store 'n' Go Pro is a smaller USB drive, just made for keeping in your pocket. It's not as chunky as the Corsair Flash Voyager GT (32GB, $64.99 direct, 4 stars) or the Kingston DataTravler R500 (128GB, $200 street, 3.5 stars), measuring only 0.3 by 2.5 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and weighing a scant 0.32 ounce. Unlike these drives, which combine high-capacity storage with rugged construction to physically protect your storage, this is a much slimmer drive.

The drive is made of plastic and metal, but it's not the heavy plastic seen on the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB, $80 street, 4 stars). The plastic shell mostly hides the metal inside, which can be seen along the sides of the drive and the lanyard loop at the back end of the drive. The USB plug retracts, requiring no cap, and a blue LED blinks and glows to tell you that the drive is on and connected.

Features and Performance
While the Store 'n' Go Pro may not offer a lot in the way of physical protection, it protects your data in a different way, with 256-bit AES hardware data encryption. Using the included V-Safe Security software, you can easily set up a password locked privacy zone, allowing you to keep most of your files accessible, while putting a lock on anything sensitive. And with Fat32 formatting, both the Store 'n' Go Pro and the V-Safe Security will work on a variety of systems: Windows (Windows 7, Vista, and XP), Mac (OS 9.0 and up), and Linux (Kernal Version 2.6.x and up).

Available at retail for $117, the 64GB Store 'n' Go Pro offers storage at $1.83 per gigabyte. By comparison, the rubber-armored 32GB Corsair Flash Voyager GT sells for $2.03 per GB, while the chunky Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB) sells for $2.35/GB. For similar security?at a much smaller capacity?the 8GB Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ sells for $14, or roughly $1.75 per GB. Unlike these other drives, which each come with a 5-year warranty, Verbatim covers the Store 'n' Go Pro with a lifetime warranty.

While Verbatim claims read speeds of up to 30 MBps and write speeds of up to 12 MBps, it didn't quite hit those speeds during testing. In our timed file transfer test, the Store 'n' Go Pro managed to match the claimed write speed (12 MBps) but didn't deliver on read speed, clocking at 22 MBps. By comparison, the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) was a tad slower, with data transfer rates of 24 MBps (read) and 10 MBps (write), while the high capacity Kingston DataTraveler R500 produced faster speeds of 30 MBps (read) and 21 MBps (write). For faster performance, try a drive with USB 3.0, like the Corsair Flash Voyager GT, which delivered write speeds of 36.7 MBps and read speeds of 95.6 MBps.

While other drives may offer more rugged construction or a cheaper price point, the 64GB Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro offers a compelling blend of storage capacity with easy to use security, letting you lock only what's private behind encryption and a password, leaving the rest freely accessible. If the 8GB offered by the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ isn't enough, you can be confident grabbing the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro.

Chronicle of a trial foretold: Breivik is following his manifesto's script

Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto includes instructions on what a 'Templar' should do if tried in a European court.

Among the early headlines from the fourth day of the trial of Anders Behring Breivik for the murder of 77 people last July was that, for the first time, Mr. Breivik did not perform his now-familiar clenched-fist salute upon arrival at the court. Several families of Breivik's victims said they found the salute offensive, and his lawyers apparently were able to convince him to stop and avoid undermining his case.

But the drop of the salute is not only significant for its effect on his defense's strategy. It also marks a significant departure from Breivik's playbook: his 1,500-page manifesto. Breivik wrote extensively not only about his own beliefs about the alleged activities of "the Marxist tyrants of Europe" and the mission of the Knights Templar, or "Templars," the group to which he claims to belong. He also wrote a comprehensive set of instructions and guidelines for what a Templar should do if tried in a European court. He appears to be following it to the extent he is able.

Breivik wrote a short section on his salute, which he claims to be "the military salutation" of the Templars. He writes that the salute, which he recommends being performed in a white glove, symbolizes strength, purity, and resistance against "the Marxist tyrants of Europe." Interestingly, he claims the salute has nothing to do with either racist "white power" salutes or with the similar, open-palmed Nazi salute.

While Breivik's manifesto does not mention the salute specifically in reference to a trial, its use at trial fits closely into what Breivik argues is the best way to use trials: as propaganda. Breivik writes that after being captured, "the subsequent court proceedings may present several propaganda opportunities." He adds that "This trial is (from our point of view), not against you but rather a trial against the regime."

One of the key openings for propaganda that Breivik saw is the opportunity to present an opening and closing statement. Breivik includes a four-page sample opening statement, which he seemed to use as a source for his own.?

His sample draws parallels between the quest of the "Templars" and that of Native American leaders like Sitting Bull ? parallels he made on the first day of testimony in his own trial. As the Monitor reported, ?Were they terrorists for fighting for their indigenous culture ? or were they heroes?? Breivik asked the court. ?My acts are based on goodness, not evil,? he added. ?If anyone is vicious it is the Socialists.?

In the manifesto, Breivik also outlines a dress code for Templars, which he says should be adhered to in court. "Our dress uniform ... will be used for the sole?purpose of representing the authority of our military order and tribunal during trial," he writes. The uniform is to include a US Marine Corp dress jacket in dark blue or black, dress pants in the same color, and an extensive set of medals and decorations including epaulettes and Templar badges. Judging from the photos of his appearances in court, Breivik seems to have been following his own dress code as best he can, though he has appeared sans pseudo-military decorations.

In his game plan for Templar trial appearances, Breivik shows every expectation of losing. The heading for his sample closing statement reads: "Closing statement ? last day of trial, after judgment (guilty)." But he also expresses hope that the trial may lead to the introduction of stiffer criminal sentences, and perhaps even introduction of the death penalty, which is currently illegal in Norway.

The trial itself may not end up as anything else than a formality where the goal can be to change the law, forcing the parliament of that country to introduce the death penalty, or harshen the penal laws in other ways. Indirectly forcing the parliament of your country to change the laws will be an indirect victory to our movement because it will provide significant media coverage of our cause and thus will contribute to future recruitment efforts.

Breivik echoed this thinking during his second day of testimony, the Monitor reported.

?No, I don?t want [capital punishment], but I would have respected that,? he said, adding that if Norway doubled the current maximum sentence it would ?serve his cause? and ?prove Norway had thrown their principles out the window."
