Cross-dressing pharaoh found in her feminine form

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

Hatshepsut ruled Egypt in the 15th century BC in a relatively long and prosperous reign. Despite her success as a female pharaoh, she is often depicted as a man in statues because the belief that pharaohs were sons of the god Amon-Re. Hatshepsut also dressed as a man to meet this expectation.

A statue uncovered in Abydos, Egypt, is thought to show her more feminine side.

An expedition led by a team from the University of Toronto, Canada, found a wooden statue of a king, thought to represent this powerful woman because of its distinctly feminine features: a smaller waist and delicate jawline.

The find also included a private offering chapel, a monumental building and the remains of over 80 animal mummies.

The chapel, where the wooden statue was found, was close to a processional route. The team leader, Mary-Ann Pouls Wegner, said it was used for a long period - 1990-1650?BC.

"The offering chapel proves that people - probably elites - were able to build monuments right next to the processional route in the Middle Kingdom, and that at least one such chapel was allowed to stand in this increasingly densely built-up area and continued to receive offerings even 800 years after its initial construction," says Pouls Wegner.

Gravity data traces Moho boundary

Scientists have mapped the boundary globally between the Earth's crust and its mantle - the so-called Moho boundary - in unprecedented detail.

They used gravity measurements from the European Space Agency's Goce satellite to model its location.

The famous "discontinuity" lies some 10-70km below the surface and marks a sharp change in rock properties.

It was first identified by the Croatian geophysicist Andrija Mohorovicic in 1909.

He determined the boundary's existence from the distinct behaviour of seismic waves produced by shallow earthquakes.

Goce can be used to sense the Moho's depth because it is able to detect subtle variations in the Earth's gravitational field.

These differences result from the uneven distribution of mass inside the planet - a signal that also reflects the major shift in rock density that occurs at the boundary.

"At the Moho, there is a discontinuity between the compositions of rock - there are rocks of different density," explained Dr Daniele Sampietro from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

"The crust has a smaller density while the mantle has a bigger density. And since the change in density means there will be a change in mass, I can use Goce to observe the Moho."

The new global map shows clearly that the boundary's depth is greatest under the big mountains, and at its shallowest under the oceans.

Today's scientists recognise the interface to be where familiar surface rocks of predominantly basaltic or granitic composition give way to peridotites.

These rocks comprise magnesium-rich, silicon-poor minerals such as olivine and pyroxene and are rarely seen at the surface.

Getting a clearer picture of where the discontinuity lies will aid the study of plate tectonics, the mechanism that explains how the Earth's rigid outer shell moves and is recycled into the planet's interior.

The information is likely also to be useful to those seeking new oil and gas resources, by making it easier to discern deep geological structures.

There are places, such as in Cornwall in southwest England, where chunks of ancient Moho have been thrust to the surface, but it remains a key quest for scientists to drill down and retrieve pristine samples of rock from either side of the discontinuity.

Such a venture is more likely to happen under the oceans because that is where the crust is thinnest.

An attempt was started in the early 1960s (Project Mohole) but was soon abandoned because of the high cost of meeting the engineering challenge.

The Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (Goce) was launched in 2009. It flies pole to pole at an altitude of just 255km - the lowest orbit of any research satellite in operation today.

The spacecraft carries three pairs of precision-built platinum blocks inside its gradiometer instrument that sense accelerations which are as small as one part in 10,000,000,000,000 of the gravity experienced on Earth.

This allows it to map the almost imperceptible differences in the pull exerted by the mass of the planet from one place to the next - from the great mountain ranges to the deepest ocean trenches.

Ethan Nadelmann: Legalization Debate Takes Off in Latin America

Something incredible is happening right now in Latin America.

After decades of being brutalized by the U.S. government's failed prohibitionist drug policies, Latin American leaders, including not just distinguished former presidents but also current presidents, are saying "enough is enough." They're demanding that the range of policy options be expanded to include alternatives that help reduce the crime, violence and corruption in their own countries -- and insisting that decriminalization and legal regulation of currently illicit drug markets be considered.

Guatemala's new president, Otto Perez Molina, is providing important leadership. As a political conservative and former general, he has credibility that others lack. When he started speaking out publicly last month about the need to consider new drug policy options including legalization, many observers thought it was just a ploy to secure greater economic and military aid from the United States. But he's demonstrated a commitment and engagement over the past month that have persuaded fellow presidents that he's serious about this. Within Guatemala, his initiative has been praised by diverse voices including prominent business leaders, Archbishop Oscar Julio Vian and the head of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), Francisco Dall'Anese.

President Perez Molina sent his vice president, Roxana Baldetti, on a tour of neighboring countries two weeks ago to seek the support of other Central American presidents for opening up a new discussion on drug policy alternatives for the region. Most said they were willing to join the discussion. (It probably helped that U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was also touring the region that week, and alienating regional leaders with unsubstantiated claims that the drug war was working.) Now the presidents have agreed to come to Guatemala on March 24 for a wide-ranging debate on the subject.

Meanwhile, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos, who had been eager to open the debate but reportedly frustrated by the failure of other regional leaders to join him, appears to have been galvanized by the Guatemalan president's initiative. He met yesterday with former presidents Fernando Henrique Cardoso (Brazil), Ricardo Lagos (Chile) and Felipe Gonz?lez (Spain) to talk about the best way to raise this issue at the Summit of the Americas meeting in Cartagena in April. He also said that he would attend the presidents' meeting in Guatemala on March 24.

Mexican President Calderon also seems increasingly willing to engage. Having waged a multi-year battle with criminal organizations whose principal source of revenue is the illicit drug traffic to the United States, no one has greater moral authority to call for alternatives to failed prohibitionist policies. And no one knows better that one cannot win a war against what is essentially a dynamic global commodities market, especially when one's country abuts the largest consumer market in the world. He put his toes in the water last year when he started saying that the United States should consider "market alternatives" if it were unable to reduce its demand for illegal drugs. And he followed up by joining with regional leaders in late 2011 in the "Tuxtla Declaration," which stated that if the demand for illegal drugs could not be reduced, "authorities in the consuming countries ought then to explore possible alternatives to eliminate the exorbitant profits of the criminals, including regulatory or market oriented options to this end. Thus, the transit of substances that continue provoking high levels of crime and violence in Latin American and Caribbean nations will be avoided."

Calls for drug policy reform are proliferating rapidly in Mexico. Calderon's predecessor, Vicente Fox, pulls no punches in saying that legalization is the best approach. Fox's predecessor, Ernesto Zedillo, joined with former Brazilian president Cardoso and former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria in organizing first a Latin American and then a Global Commission on Drug Policy, both of which called for major reform of drug policies, including legal regulation of marijuana, and also for "breaking the taboo" on considering all drug policy options, including legal regulation.

Now business leaders in Monterrey and Mexico City, wary of the growing power of criminal organizations, are joining the debate with sophistication, resources and support for legalization in one form or another. And, from the left, Javier Sicilia, the influential poet turned social justice movement leader, is saying much the same.

It's thus no surprise that Mexican foreign secretary Patricia Espinosa announced at a meeting of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly in late February that her government now supported a debate on legalization. And just a little less surprising that yesterday President Calderon said that he too would attend the presidents' gathering in Guatemala on March 24.

All this presents a dilemma for the U.S. government. When Vice President Biden visited the region last week, he made clear that the Obama administration firmly opposes legalization -- but also acknowledged, as President Obama had in early 2011, that the topic was a legitimate subject for discussion. That modest concession was important, not least in sending a clear message to other federal officials, including the drug czar, senior diplomats and Pentagon officials, that outright rejection of any discussion was no longer required. It manifested yesterday when the State Department's (Acting) Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, Mike Hammer, stated that "We are, of course, willing to discuss the issue to express our opinion as far as why we do not see it as the best way in which to address the problem." "It is, he continued, "a serious subject and we are not in any way opposed to discussing it. Our position, though, is very clear." Latin American media quickly picked up on the slight change of tone from Washington.

This all represents a dramatic turn of events in the regional, and potentially, global debate about drug policy. In Latin America, current presidents are now taking the baton from ex-presidents in calling for a new drug policy debate with all options on the table. Respected intellectuals like Carlos Fuentes and Enrique Krauze in Mexico, Sergio Ramirez in Nicaragua and Mario Vargas Llosa in Peru are speaking out. So are distinguished former cabinet ministers as well as leaders in business, media and the arts.

The immediate political challenge will be to sustain this momentum in the face of vigorous behind-the-scenes efforts by the U.S. government to suppress the debate, notwithstanding public statements that they're open to it. The more substantive challenge will be to flesh out proposals for alternative strategies. Presidents Santos, Otto Perez Molina and others know full well that no nation can unilaterally legalize drugs, that any significant changes in direction must be pursued multilaterally, and that major reform of the failed global drug prohibition regime of the 20th century will take years and likely decades. Governments as well as non-governmental organizations in the region are just beginning to look seriously at alternative drug policy options, enlisting scholars and other policy experts.

Fortunately the drug war consensus within the United States is also dissolving. George Shultz, the former Secretary of State (and Treasury) and Paul Volcker are among the members of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, whose bold recommendations last June stirred debate worldwide. Former President Jimmy Carter has endorsed the Global Commission's recommendations and former President Bill Clinton has repeatedly expressed regrets for the drug war excesses he condoned when he was in the White House. African-American leaders who previously supported the drug war are coming to the conclusion that it did nothing to lessen drug addiction on their communities but much to incarcerate an extraordinary number of young men and women.

Public support for legalizing marijuana is rising rapidly -- from 36 percent in favor in 2006 to 50 percent in 2011, according to Gallup's polling. And this past week, the conservative Evangelical Christian leader, Pat Robertson, surprised lots of people by saying marijuana should be legally regulated like alcohol, and by endorsing ballot initiatives in Colorado and Washington State that would do just that if they prevail this November.

The biggest obstacle right now is the head-in-the-sand resistance within the Obama administration and Congress to any real discussion of alternative drug policy options. Censorship and self-censorship in this area within the federal government is endemic, driven by fears that any internal policy memos, or even oral discussions, that conclude with politically inconvenient recommendations, are not just unwelcome but dangerous to one's standing and career. One result is that U.S. government officials will be increasingly handicapped in the international drug policy discussions at Cartagena and elsewhere, armed only with defenses of failed U.S. policies but bereft of any in-depth analysis of the options that other governments are putting on the table.

The worst prohibition, it must be said, is a prohibition on thinking -- and that, sadly, is what the U.S. government is guilty of today.

home pest control information - Stock up on Jeyes Fluid to Ward off ...

There are many reasons why you should keep your surroundings clean. But perhaps the most relevant of them is lessening the appearance of household pests such as cockroaches, bed bugs, flies, mosquitoes and rats. These vile creatures like to take up residence in damp, dark, moist and dirty areas in the house.

Thankfully, there are numerous cleaning products and disinfectants such as Jeyes fluid and bed bug sprays that can help us annihilate the pests lurking in our homes. Pest control supplies should be stashed in your household cleaning kit in order to keep your home spic and span.

Jeyes fluid is marketed as an outdoor cleaner. If you think all disinfectants and outdoor cleaners were just recently introduced, think again. Jeyes has actually been around for quite some time. Cleaners like it were used by experienced gardeners during the Victorian times. Of course, modern technology has a hand in making these disinfectants easier to use and more effective now.

Jeyes can be considered one of the best multipurpose pest control supplies available. A lot of bugs and pests actually come from the outdoors and find their way into your home. The best way to build the defences of our home from these unwanted pests is to keep our outdoor space clean. They should be clean enough to be unsavoury for these pests.

Drains, gutters, patios and pathways are often the hideouts of these critters. You can use your Jeyes fluid to clean these areas of the house. Now is the best time to scrub grime off of your paths and patios as well. Outdoor areas are quite prone to the growth of moulds because they are always exposed to high humidity levels. If you have outdoor furniture that is also fast becoming a hotspot for unwanted critters you can try using a reliable disinfectant to clean them up. These tiny creatures prefer living in foams, feathers and couch stuffing. For those with green houses or barns, keep them clean with these disinfectants.

For tight spots such as the drain, check out what Jeyes has to offer. They actually have drain unblocker products that will work in getting rid of debris that is blocking the drain and getting rid of the smell they left behind.

The disinfectant properties of Jeyes go beyond the usual. It does not only kill common germs, bacteria and viruses but is also strong enough to kill bird flu virus.

The also come in very convenient to use packs and bottles so you can easily spray the product on your patio or furniture and scrub away. Contrary to popular belief, cleaning does not have to be a taxing job. All you have to do is find pest control supplies and bed bug spray that are loaded in an easy to spray bottle and you are good to go.

It is customary for home owners to set up a date for general cleaning. While many people only do this two times a year, it might be more ideal to increase the frequency of general cleaning for sanitary purposes. Make it 4 times a year so you can really prevent infestation in your home.

Remember that one tiny bed bug can lay eggs that will hatch to thousands of bed bugs. So not doing anything to your furniture or upholstery that is infested with these tiny critters for a long time can actually do a lot of damage.

Get a task board and list down all the general cleaning tasks you need to do. You do not have to take on all the tasks in one day. Start with the more difficult tasks beginning of the week such as cleaning gutters and unblocking drainage and then work your way to the easier tasks like cleaning your upholstery, getting rid of cobwebs or cleaning your trash. Organisation is one of the keys in proper pest control.

If you have easy to use disinfectants and cleaning products such as Jeyes fluid, maintaining your home can be done without a hitch. Stock up on pest control supplies to keep handy in your home. You never know when you might need that bed bug spray to protect your mattress and upholstery or that disinfectant to scrub your patio.

Sarah Shore writes articles for Pest Control Group who can provide you with the pest control supplies that you need to get rid of a range of problems. From the universally recognised Jeyes Fluid to an effective range of bed bug spray.

(AP) ? Raising campaign cash in Republican territory, President Barack Obama on Friday hailed a rebounding economy and accused Republicans of banking on voters having "amnesia" about the steps that led to a brutal economic collapse.

"The recovery is accelerating. America is coming back," Obama told 600 supporters at a Texas fundraiser.

Bidding for re-election, Obama bounded between a rally-style event in a sprawling Rolls-Royce manufacturing plant south of Richmond, Va., to a pair of Houston fundraisers. Framing the trip: a new monthly jobs report showing employers 227,000 jobs in February, the latest sign that the economy is headed in the right direction.

Every month's jobs report is seen as a barometer of the economy and an important factor in the presidential race. The unemployment rate held steady at 8.3 percent, the result of more Americans looking for work as job growth takes hold month by month.

The jobs report and split loyalties among Republican voters assessing Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and the rest of the GOP field give Obama's team renewed confidence that the path he has forged could help him win re-election and rebuild the economy. But privately, his advisers know that outside factors in the United States and abroad ? from high gasoline prices to instability in the Middle East ? could still derail his political and economic ambitions in the months leading to the fall election.

Pointing at Republicans, Obama said: "They think you have amnesia. They think you've forgotten how we got into this mess."

He spoke at Union Station at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, with tickets starting at $500 per person.

Defending his health care law, Obama said preventive care for women was now covered, including "checkups, mammograms, birth control. We fought for this because the top doctors and medical experts in the country said this kind of preventive care saves women's lives," he said, arguing too that it saves money.

Obama's policy on access to contraception has faced criticism from Republicans and religious groups, who said the mandate that birth control be covered by insurance, even for employers whose faiths forbid contraception, was a violation of the Constitution's guarantee of religious freedom.

"So when you see politicians who are trying to take us back to the days when this care was more expensive and harder to get for women ? and I know you're seeing some of that here in Texas ? you just remember we can't let them get away with it," Obama said. "We fought for this change. We're going to protect this change."

Both in Houston and on the factory floor in Virginia, the president cautioned that too many Americans still long for work. But he said the nation's economy had made progress because of difficult decisions he made, including rescuing U.S. automakers.

"We're obviously still in the midst of a lot of struggles for a lot of people but the trend lines are good," Obama said at the home of Tony Chase, a businessman and University of Houston law professor. Seventy people paid $35,800 each to attend the dinner.

Romney, campaigning in Jackson, Miss., took a different view: The unemployment rate remains above 8 percent. "This president has not succeeded; this president has failed ? and that's the reason we're going to get rid of him in 2012," Romney said.

Obama was stocking up on campaign cash as Republicans appear locked in a primary process that may not be settled for months.

Republican Gov. Robert McDonnell of Virginia, who joined Obama at the factory and has been talked about as a potential vice presidential candidate, said he was heartened by Obama's recognition of the innovative Virginia plant. "When the president is right, I'm going to commend him and say he's doing things right," he said.

"If he really wants to get Americans back to work, he needs to look at cutting the taxes and the bureaucracy and the regulatory burden on American business," McDonnell said.

Yet every strong month of hiring undermines arguments from Republicans that Obama has failed to deliver on promises to pull the economy out of recession. Since the beginning of December, the country has added 734,000 jobs, the strongest three months of pure job growth since the Great Recession.

Obama has highlighted the U.S. economy's addition of 429,000 manufacturing jobs during the past two years, touring factories in Wisconsin, Washington state and North Carolina in recent weeks. The United States lost 2.2 million manufacturing jobs in the two years before that.

Political calculations are not far from the surface in these trips ? Virginia is expected to be a major election battleground later this year, and the Houston fundraisers added to the president's campaign bankroll. Though the end of January, Obama's campaign and the Democratic Party have raised about $250 million.

In Virginia, Obama promoted a $1 billion plan to create a network of up to 15 regional institutes to create partnerships among private industry, universities and community colleges and government. He also announced a $45 million pilot program that would show the type of potential collaboration among academia and industry.

In Texas, Obama was raising campaign cash among supporters who live in a reliably Republican state. Jimmy Carter, in 1976, was the last Democratic presidential candidate to carry Texas, but changing demographics and an influx in Hispanic voters have given Democrats hopes of competing in the state beyond the 2012 elections.

Deaths mount in Syria on eve of Annan visit

Syrian government forces pressed on with deadly assaults on Friday, killing around 50 civilians, monitors said, on the eve of a peace mission by international envoy Kofi Annan.

And in a new blow to the regime after this week's resignation of a deputy cabinet minister, a dozen army officers defected, including six generals and a woman lieutenant, going across the border to Turkey, reports said.

On the diplomatic front Russia, one of Syria's last remaining allies along with China, criticised as "unbalanced" a new US-led initiative to push through a damning UN Security Council resolution.

Underscoring divisions among world powers, US State Department spokeswoman Vitoria Nuland said Washington is "not overly optimistic" about the passing of the resolution "in the near future."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is to explain Moscow's stance in talks on Saturday in Cairo with his Arab counterparts.

But first he will meet Annan in the Egyptian capital late on Friday before the UN-Arab League envoy heads to Syria, a UN spokesman in New York said.

Regime troops stormed a village in Idlib, and attacked other districts there, reflecting growing fears that the northwestern province will meet the same fate as the battered rebel stronghold of Baba Amr in the city of Homs.

"Troops attacked the village of Ain Larose and opened fire killing 13 civilians," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights told AFP in Beirut.

They were among nearly 50 people killed in the assaults in Idlib and elsewhere across the country by regime forces, including the rebel province of Homs where rocket and mortar attacks claimed 10 lives.

The deaths came as tens of thousands of people demonstrated against the regime across the country, with huge demonstrations taking place in the second city Aleppo.

Protesters demanding the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad chanted: "Assad your days are numbered" and "May God damn your soul."

They also called for the arming of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA).

But Annan who is due to meet Assad in Damascus on Saturday morning, on the heels of a two-day visit by UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos, has warned against further militarisation of the crisis, in remarks echoed by EU foreign ministers, as well as by Washington.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Annan would not leave Damascus, and would only talk with opposition leaders outside Syria after he leaves on Sunday.

Following his departure, he will visit other countries in the region, Ban told reporters in New York, without elaborating, though diplomatic sources in Ankara said Annan's first stop from Damascus would be Turkey.

Ban stressed that Annan's top priority must be to secure an immediate ceasefire between government and opposition forces, and then "to urge Assad to facilitate humanitarian assistance and access."

Faced with a groundswell of pressure to end the bloodshed, Syria said it was ready to allow the United Nations to conduct a humanitarian mission.

Amos said in Ankara on Friday that a "joint preliminary humanitarian assessment mission" had been agreed, to provide assistance to people urgently in need of it.

The mission would only be a "first step", she said, insisting that Damascus must allow aid groups "unhindered access to evacuate the wounded and deliver desperately needed supplies."

No UN aid agencies are currently allowed into Syria, where the opposition says 8,500 have been killed in the year-long conflict, and information is scarce on the details of the civilians' needs.

But a UN spokeswoman in Geneva said 1.5 million people might be in need of food aid.

Following Amos's visit, China on Friday offered $2 million of humanitarian aid to improve the humanitarian conditions in different parts of Syria.

Regime forces have been massing troops around Idlib for days to root out rebel FSA fighters.

Armoured units have surrounded the hilly district of Jabal al-Zawiya, where rebel fighters have been active, and there were reports that civilians were fleeing en masse.

Abdel Rahman said the army was hunting down rebels in the area because "the largest number of deserters are in Jabal al-Zawiya."

Activists fear that Idlib could suffer the same fate as the Baba Amr, which was stormed by government troops on March 1 after a month of shelling.

The UN humanitarian chief briefly toured Baba Amr on Wednesday with a Syrian Red Crescent team, and said the district has been "totally destroyed."

"There were hardly any people left there," Amos said.

Ahead of his visit, Annan urged "the Syrian opposition to come together to work with us to find a solution that will respect the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Speaking in Cairo earlier this week, the former UN chief argued that the further militarising the conflict would only make the situation worse.

"I hope that no one is very seriously thinking of using force in this situation," he said.

On Friday, the opposition and Turkish news agency Anatolia reported that a dozen Syrian army officers had defected and fled to Turkey where they were to join rebels based there.

Anatolia said four generals and two colonels who had been stationed in Damascus, Homs and Latakia, had crossed the border into Turkey's southern province of Hatay to join the Syrian rebels.

Fahd al-Masri, an advisor for Syrian opposition group the Higher Revolutionary Council, told AFP that six brigadier generals had defected in the past 48 hours along with four colonels, a lieutenant colonel, a major and a female lieutenant.

(AP Photo/ Alexander Zemlianichenko Jr)

(AP) ? The head of the major international election observer mission in Russia says there were "serious problems" in the vote that returned Vladimir Putin to the presidency.

Tonino Picula said in a statement Monday that "there was no real competition, and abuse of government resources ensured that the ultimate winner of the election was never in doubt."

Picula headed the short-term observer mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

A brief synopsis of the mission's findings did not address Russian independent observers' contentions that there were widespread cases of people casting multiple ballots, but said the election "process deteriorated during the vote count, which was assessed negatively in almost one-third of polling stations observed."

The Central Elections Commission says Prime Minister Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, got more than 63 percent of the nationwide vote, but the independent Russian elections watchdog Golos says incomplete reports from its observers of individual polling station counts indicate he hovered perilously close to the 50-percent mark needed for a first-round victory.

The OSCE observers' conclusions may have significant bearing on whether Russia's opposition forces will be able to maintain the momentum of the unprecedentedly large protests they were able to marshal in the past three months.

A protest rally has been set for Monday evening on Moscow's Pushkin Square, one of the central city's most iconic locations. News reports say some 12,000 police and troops will be on duty to ensure order in the city.

The recent months' protests were the largest public show of anger in post-Soviet Russia, where opposition demonstrations previously had been severely limited by officials, and any unauthorized gatherings were harshly dispersed by police.

However, officials gave permission for the massive rallies, which attracted tens of thousands, but it was not clear if the tolerance would continue in the post-election period.

On Monday, outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Justice Ministry to present its explanation for last year's rejection of registration for the People's Freedom Party, an organization led by some of the opposition's most prominent figures. He also ordered the prosecutor-general to re-examine the legality of the conviction of imprisoned former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and more than 30 others regarded by the opposition as political prisoners.

Some observers saw the move as a maneuver to vitiate continued protests.

Medvedev, "it appears, is trying in advance to break the protest wave, " political analyst Pavel Svyatenkov was quoted as saying by the ITAR-Tass news agency.

At least one opposition figured vowed that strategy wouldn't work.

In general, this step can be welcomed. But I don't think it should stop the criticism of authorities," Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov told the state news agency RIA Novosti.

Developmental Disabilities in the News: Military Families Seek ...

KILLEEN, Texas -- Prepared to remain in the military indefinitely, Lt. Col. Chuck May is determined to get his children the health care they need.
"I would stay in the Army well beyond 30 years if I knew I could have my family covered with TRICARE," said the officer in Fort Hood's Operational Test Command. "I don't care about pay raises, and I don't care about promotions."
May's sons, ages 11 and 14, have been diagnosed with forms of autism spectrum disorder. In the year before TRICARE covered any autism treatment, the May family spent $19,000 on therapy for just one of his sons.
Now TRICARE offers autism therapy through the Extended Care Health Option, but only active-duty service members are eligible to participate. If May retires, his sons lose the coverage.

AMD absorbs server startup SeaMicro for $330 million, says it's no impulse buy

AMD buys SeaMicro
AMD has faced some tough tactical decisions since it sold its handheld chip division to Qualcomm in 2008 and effectively stepped out of the smartphone business. Whistling that "No Regrets" tune, it has burrowed ever deeper into ever bigger devices, from laptops to desktops and massively multi-core servers and supercomputers. Today's purchase of Silicon Valley startup SeaMicro is an exponential leap in the same direction, because SeaMicro specializes in building low-power server hardware for entire datacenters. One of its key innovations is a "fabric" that hooks up thousands of processors, memory units and storage devices into a sensible whole for cloud computing. Rather than trying to compete with its own server-building customers, AMD may well offer them SeaMicro's platform on license and seek to recoup its $330 million investment that way. With ARM also stepping up its server efforts, it's a question of snoozing and losing.
