Be Curious About Literacy was the theme of Smart Start Rowan?s first annual child care conference and recognition event held at Hood Theological Seminary on June 9. The conference began with the keynote address delivered by Greg Zelnik or better known as Zelnik the Magician.
Certificates of recognition were presented to 6 individuals who had earned associate degrees in Early Childhood Education during the past year. Recipients included Barbara Eller, Megan Lyerly, Olympia Smyre, Tavella Miller, Brittany Murray and Sharon Wood.
Certificates were also presented to 2 individuals who had earned bachelor degrees in Early Childhood Education during the past year. Recipients included Judy McDaniels and Christine Gray.
The North Carolina Division of Child Development issues rated licenses to childcare facilities throughout the state that meet set standards and criteria in childcare. Childcare centers and family care homes receive ratings ranging from one star to five stars. Facilities can increase their star ratings by raising the overall quality of their programs. A total of five centers and family care homes were recognized for their increases in quality based on these standards. Recipients included Home Away From Home for receiving three stars. Four facilities received the highest licensing level of a five star rating, Advantage Children?s Center, McKnight Child Development Center, Noah?s Playloft Preschool and West Rowan Head Start.
The highlight of the event was the recognition of three childcare professionals whose contributions in early childhood education distinguished them in the estimation of the parents and colleagues who nominated them for the awards. The Director of the Year award, sponsored by Walser Technology Group, was presented to Andrea Mohammad, Director at Rowan Medical Child Development Center. The Teacher of the Year award, sponsored by First Bank on Jake Alexander Blvd., was presented to Pam Baugh, a teacher at St. John?s Child Development Center. And, the Family Child Care Professional of the Year award, sponsored by Snow Benefits Group, was presented to Deborah Neely of God?s Little Blessings.
