Am I Cheating? Fidelity And On-line Dating ?

On-line courting is one of the quickest rising industries in the UK today. Day by day, hundreds of 1000?s of us go surfing to one or more of the growing number of websites out there; some looking for critical relationships, others for friendship and companions, and still others for informal flings and that additional ?bit on the aspect?.

Some websites declare to be purely for genuine singles in search of dedicated, long run relationships, others flip a blind eye to, and even actively encourage, married or cohabiting members who might or could not use the sites with the blessing of their spouse or partner. After all many individuals who use on-line dating sites achieve this purely for chatting and exchanging messages and never meet nose to nose; with the steady development of the Internet as a communication software because it?s inception, it has change into increasingly potential for netizens to conduct deeply involved, real time relationships with folks they?ve by no means truly met.

So what does this change with regard to the old methods of doing things? When does a web-based relationship develop into ?intimate?? Are you able to fall in love with an avatar, and can you cheat on someone, or with someone, who?s in a special time zone?

A latest examine by Dr Martin Graff of the University of Glamorgan confirmed that our perceptions of what does and does not constitute ?cheating? on-line are affected by a variety of elements ? most prominently, and perhaps unsurprisingly, by the extent of data relationship website customers are ready to reveal about themselves; Dr Graff explains

?From this examine, it seems that the higher the extent of typed disclosure, then the stronger the notion of infidelity.?

Seemingly, within the absence of the ?nonverbal cues? on which face to face interaction depends so strongly, how a lot we are ready to present away about ourselves is the primary indicator of how intimate our on-line relationships are and by extension, the degree of unfaithfulness inherent within the actions of non single website users.

Maybe extra surprisingly, the study also showed that the time of day at which online encounters happened was also a key think about establishing infidelity, concluding that

?Exchanges later within the night have been perceived to be more infidelitous, than those which might happen within the day or early evening.?

Dr Graff?s research is ongoing and subsequent phases will have a look at the issues of jealousy and belief in the0020context of on-line relationships.

In the end the jury continues to be out on precisely what constitutes online infidelity and indeed relationships over the online as a whole. It?s doubtful that a firm conclusion will ever be reached because the world of online courting and relationships, as in ?actual life?, will all the time be immensely subjective as a result of differing ethical requirements and emotional responses of the people involved. Studies like Dr Graff?s can nonetheless present a fascinating perception into the human causes and effects of the fashionable world, and the way these are formed by the route of our rapidly creating and altering communications technology.

Notion of Syria power transition "an illusion": Iran FM

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The idea of a managed transition of power in Syria is an "illusion," Iran's foreign minister said on Sunday, as his Syrian counterpart expressed Damascus' commitment to international mediator Kofi Annan's peace plan.

"Thinking naively and wrongly that if there is a power vacuum perhaps in Syria and if there is a transition of power in Syria, simply another government will come to power, that I think is just a dream," Ali Akbar Salehi said at a news conference with his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Moualem.

"It's an illusion. We have to look carefully at Syria and what's happening inside the country."

Moualem said Syria was also committed to Annan's six-point plan that aims to end 16 months of violence in which 18,000 people have been killed.

The plan calls for a ceasefire, which has been widely ignored by both sides, as a first stage in the political transition to ending the violence.

It also calls for access for aid, the release of arbitrarily detained people, freedom of movement for journalists and the freedom to protest peacefully.

"We are committed to fulfill Mr. Annan's plan fully because we consider this plan a reasonable plan," he said.

Moualem said Syria was able to defend every inch of its soil from what he called a conspiracy by armed terrorist groups that served Israel's interests.

"I assure you the Syrian people are insistent, not just on confronting this conspiracy, but they are insistent on emerging victorious," Moualem, who has not appeared since a bomb attack killed four of President Bashar al-Assad's top security officials nearly two weeks ago.

"Today I tell you, Syria is stronger ... In less than a week, they were defeated and the battle failed (in Damascus) so they moved on to Aleppo, and I assure you, their plots will fail," said Moualem.

In Israel, Romney declares Jerusalem to be capital, takes aggressive stand against Iran

JERUSALEM - Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech. The Old City formed a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was matter-of-fact and in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display earlier in the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama also visited Israel as a candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Senor's comments caused a stir in the hours leading to Romney's speech, a reminder of the controversy that Romney had created a few days earlier in London.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

Smart Headlights Let Drivers See Through Rain and Snow

light,LED,safety, driveDrive through a pounding thunderstorm or heavy snowfall at night and you?ll notice that your headlights illuminate the maelstrom of raindrops or flakes more than they shed light on the road ahead. This safety hazard can be greatly reduced by anticipating the movement and velocity of the drops or flakes and shining the headlights into the spaces between them, according to a team of researchers who?ve built just such a ?smart? headlight system. (pdf)

The headlight is actually an array of bulbs. The system uses a digital camera to track the motion of individual raindrops or snowflakes and then applies a computer algorithm to predict where each bit of precipitation will be a few milliseconds later. It deactivates bulbs that would otherwise illuminate the drops or flakes in their predicted positions.

?We have introduced a headlight system that can see through rain? and other precipitation, says Srinivasa Narasimhan, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University?s Robotics Institute. Narasimhan?s team worked with researchers from Texas Instruments and France?s Paris Institute of Technology, with funding from the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology and Intel Corp.

Narasimhan is the first to admit that the concept sounds a bit farfetched. The key is that even a sheet of heavy rain is still mostly empty space. ?When we see rain, we see streaks, so it looks like the precipitation is inhabiting the air very densely,? Narasimhan says. ?But if you look at an instantaneous snapshot of rain it?s actually very sparse. This is the case even in a thunderstorm.?

He and his colleagues have built what he refers to as a prototype ?reactive illumination? headlight. Its camera captures an image every 8 milliseconds and adjusts the bulbs in the headlamp accordingly within 13 milliseconds. Narasimhan claims it reduces the visibility of rain four meters away from the light source by about 70 percent when a car is moving at 30 kilometers per hour. The prototype reduces the visibility of snowflakes, which drop more slowly and tend to be larger than raindrops, by 60 percent.light,LED,safety, drive

Of course, for a smart headlight to be useful, it would have to be accurate while traveling at high speeds. Narasimhan wants to test his headlights in cars traveling at least 95 kilometers per hour. ?From simulations the we?ve done we know the system as a whole needs to operate at least four times faster than it currently does in order to provide drivers with a 70 percent visibility enhancement in a thunderstorm,? he says. ?As you?re driving really fast the rain is coming at you faster, and therefore your system has to be much faster.?

The researchers hope to cut system latency by developing faster ways of transferring images from the camera to the microprocessor running their algorithm and from that microprocessor to the headlight. This need for speed might be accompanied by a headlight using arrays of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) rather than bulbs. These LEDs might even be combined with image sensors on a single chip to facilitate high-speed operation, according to Narasimhan.

Another issue is the light produced by other vehicles on the road. If you are driving on a road and oncoming traffic is likewise using reactive illumination headlights, those lights would be trained on the spaces between the precipitation and not increase the visibility of those raindrops or flakes for you, Narasimhan insists. If, however, you are the only one using such headlights, your ability to see through the precipitation would be mitigated by other cars indiscriminately lighting up everything around them.

Either way, Narasimhan says it?s likely going to be another two or three years before his smart headlight system is road ready.

Batman star Christian Bale visits shooting victims

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the Colorado theater shooting Tuesday, and thanked medical staff and police officers who responded to the attack that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.

Bale visited with little advance warning and also stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims near the movie theater that was showing "The Dark Knight Rises" when the gunfire erupted.

Carey Rottman, one of those injured in Friday's shooting, posted two photos of himself with Bale on his Facebook page.

Janie Bowman-Hayes, assistant vice president of surgical services at sister hospital Swedish Medical Center, said she and co-workers were attending a luncheon at The Medical Center of Aurora to thank staff who tended to victims. "When we got there, then we found out he was there," she said.

Bale, humble and dressed casually in a black T-shirt and jeans, thanked the staff, shook hands and agreed to have his photo taken with employees, Bowman-Hayes said.

"He just said he wanted to come to thank all of us because he has been thinking about this. He knows the whole world has been thinking about this," she said. "He took it upon himself to come and thank us."

An online campaign had urged Bale to visit survivors of the shooting.

Bale also stopped by a growing memorial near the theater and walked among the 12 crosses erected for each of the slain victims. Many people there didn't realize who he was or chose to leave him alone.

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman told The Denver Post that Bale was representing himself, not the movie studio.

Bale, who stars as Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises," previously issued a written statement saying: "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

President Barack Obama and members of the Denver Broncos also have made hospital visits to some of the survivors.

Bowman-Hayes and her staff cared for patients at both Swedish Medical Center and The Medical Center of Aurora after the shootings, whether it was in the operating room or intensive care unit, or by washing medical instruments.

She said the staff appreciated Bale's visit.

"He did this out of his heart, and you could really tell. It was so sincere," she said. "It was just, 'thank you.'"

Q: Does the recent $100 Billion to be given to the IMF signify the ...

Q&A: Does the recent 0 Billion to be given to the IMF signify the dollar?s end as reserve currency is near?

Take the events of the past year plus these two RECENT EVENTS

1. $ 100 BILLION for the IMF (June 2009) ? tacked on to supplemental appropriations bill

?Democrats agree to IMF money in U.S. war bill?

http://www.newsdaily.com/stories/n02443367-us-obama-budget-wars/

?WASHINGTON, June 2, 2009 (Reuters) ? Democrats in the U.S. Congress have reached a deal to boost support to the International Monetary Fund, lawmakers? aides said on Tuesday, a victory for President Barack Obama who pledged to help the lender assist countries in the global economic crisis. The war funding measure will provide a $ 100 billion credit line to the IMF, increase the U.S. member contribution to the IMF by $ 8 billion and authorize the United States to back the IMF?s plan to sell 400 tons (12.97 million ounces) of gold, said the aides, who declined further identification.

Obama had pleaded with the House of Representatives and the Senate to approve the provisions and the full funding package is expected to be completed in the coming days.?

2. IMF speaking openly about a new global reserve currency

http://bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601068&sid=asA5xHwBsIeM

?The International Monetary Fund said it?s possible to take the ?revolutionary? step of creating a new global reserve currency to replace the dollar over time.

The IMF?s so-called special drawing rights could be used as the basis for a new currency, First Deputy Managing Director John Lipsky told a panel discussing reserve currencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum today.

?There are many, many attractions in the long run to such an outcome,? Lipsky told a panel discussing reserve currencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum today. ?But this is not a quick, short or easy decision,? he said, adding that it would be ?quite revolutionary.? ?.

(end quote)

All things considered, including the drop in the dollar over the past few weeks, I?m not feeling very confident that the dollar can retain its status as reserve currency for much longer.

What happens to the value of the dollars in our bank accounts once the reserve status is lost?

Goldsenze Answer:

As long as they keep printing, the dollar will slowly lose its world status. What does that mean for current holders of the dollar? hyperinflation ? significant loss of buying power. Trading more dollars for goods/services.

In order to bring about a new global currency to further consolidate the power and control of the world economies, they need to kill the world?s current reserve currency. That way we can accept a new currency in desperation and so congress can claim the new global currency as legal tender.

Countries that hold USD as its main reserve currency will also accept a global currency in desperation.

It comes down to: Who will want to buy a loaf of bread for $ 20 USDs?

What we need to do is reject the new global currency and restore power of coining money and controling the value thereof back to where it belongs ? the people!

Bless Ron Paul for his efforts!

You will learn about different techniques to achieve a natural childbirth, including Lamaze which will help you learn to distract during contractions and decrease your perception of pain and methods to decrease the discomfort you will experience. Additionally, you will learn about different methods of delivery such as a water delivery. Water delivery offers the buoyancy effect which can have a tremendous effect at alleviating the pressure and pain you will experience. Water delivery also provides an environment for the baby to enter the world similar to that of the womb with less sound, light and temperature changes.?

4. Take pleasure in your pregnancy. Taking the 9 months you have to grow this miracle in your body is a miracle in itself. Try to remain as happy and calm as you can. Not only is it good for the baby and your general well-being but it also produces hormones oxytocin and endorphins. These are "feel-good" hormones that pass through the placenta and are exchanged with your unborn child.

??

5. Trust your body. Educating yourself on childbirth is most certainly recommended but don't overestimate the body's power of instinct. Trust that your body knows what to do. You can help it out by being in the right state of mind and educating yourself on the body's way of know exactly what to do.

??

6. Mind set. Prepare your mind for the realities of childbirth by watching natural childbirth videos and reading childbirth preparation books

??

7. Labor. During labor - remember to BREATHE. This labor method is the oldest of them all and essential to relaxation. Visualize less pain - create a mental picture of the child in your harms, work through thoughts of fear, pain and visualize yourself working through it. Tune in with soothing music if possible. Start with soothing and calm music and as labor progresses switch to faster tempo music. Music is a great distraction to pain.

??

8. Birth. At the moment of birth, if possible, bring the child to your bare chest. Let the baby hear your voice and heartbeat and smell your scent. If breastfeeding, offer your breast as soon as possible.

Remember to remain flexible. Your ideal labor and delivery will be a natural one, but be flexible and open enough to realize when medical intervention may be needed for the safety of the baby and yourself. Follow your doctor's recommendations and remember the ultimate outcome and goal is the safe delivery of a healthy baby.

Congratulations. Pregnancy, labor and birth happen thousands of times a day but the miracle of it is unique to you and your child and is a true miracle of life.

Your question: Will you, or have you ever considered natural birthing methods? (post your comments below)

Reality TV romances beyond 'The Bachelorette'

Craig Sjodin / ABC

Emily Maynard on "The Bachelorette."

By Ree Hines

Another season of ?The Bachelorette? is over, and once again, true love -- or a reasonable facsimile -- prevailed. Yes, after weeks of cycling through suitors, (spoiler alert!) Emily Maynard gave her final rose to Jef Holm and he gave her a proposal (and a great big diamond too). And of course, she said yes.

Now they?ll live happily ever.... OK, who are we kidding? If Emily and Jef go the way the vast majority of couples from the ?Bachelor? and ?Bachelorette? reality TV franchise have, they?re far more likely to say ?I don?t? than ?I do? to each other.

In fact, with 24 seasons and 24 potential pairings between the two shows, only two season-ending couples ever swapped vows.

Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter, from the first season of ?The Bachelorette,? were married on an ABC special (aptly titled ?Trista and Ryan?s Wedding?) in 2003. Today they?re still together and have two children.

And while Jason Mesnick gave his final rose to Melissa Rycroft on ?The Bachelor?s? 13th season finale, he married his last-minute switcheroo pick, Molly Malaney. They too were married on an ABC special (aptly titled ?Jason and Molly?s Wedding?) in 2010.

Two other couples can kind-of-sort-of chalk up their marriages to the shows, but they didn?t actually share any on-screen time together. Jesse Csincsak, of ?The Bachelorette?s? fourth season and Ann Leuders of season 13 of ?The Bachelor? walked down the aisle after meeting as show alums. It was much the same story ?Bachelor 10?s? Petyon Wright and her now-husband ?Bachelorette 6?s? Chris Lambton.

But that?s it!

Now don?t let those results lead you to lose faith in finding real love on the boob tube. Just because the shows that aim for a happily-ever-after often fail to find it, that doesn?t mean reality TV is lacking in love. You just have to know where to look.

?Survivor?

Somewhere in between their attempts to outwit, outplay and outlast their tribemates, a few ?Survivor? castaways managed to out-romance the competition and walk away from the game with the ultimate reality TV alliance -- marriage.

The first and probably best known ?Survivor? union is the one between ?Boston Rob? Mariano and Amber Brkich, two past players who found love during the ?All-Stars? season, got engaged on finale night and made it official months later. They?re now the proud parents of three children.

Jaime Dugan and Erik Huffman met during ?Survivor: China? and tied the knot less than two years later. Alex Bell and Kim Powers, of the ?Amazon? and ?Africa? editions of the show respectively, also found love on ?Survivor.?

And the Jeff Probst-hosted reality TV staple could soon claim two more marriages. Past players and longtime couple Jenna Morasca (?Survivor: Amazon? and ?All-Stars?) and Ethan Zohn (?Survivor: Africa? and ?All-Stars?) are currently engaged, as are ?Redemption Island? pair David Murphy and Carolina Eastwood.

?Biggest Loser?

There?s something about this weight-loss competition that leads to gaining spouses. Whether it?s the shared goals, the hard work or just the close quarters on the ?Biggest Loser? ranch, the experience produces lasting love results.

For instance, while there were no visible sparks between season-two winner Matt Hoover and third-place ?Loser? Suzy Preston during the show's run, the two fell for each other all the same. Months after their season ended, the pair appeared on TODAY, and Matt popped the question. Suzy accepted. The couple married in 2006 and have two children together.

During the finale for season three of ?The Biggest Loser,? Marty Wolff became engaged to his former co-competitor Amy Hildreth. They later married and now have a child. And Stephanie Anderson and Sam Poueu, who met and fell in love in ?Loser?s? ninth season, married in April of this year.

The next ?Biggest Loser? success story to take place off the scale could be the match between former contestants Antoine Dove and Alexandra White, who were engaged during the season eight finale.

Marriages aside, both ?Biggest Loser? and ?Survivor? are responsible for plenty of other relationships, and the two reality competitions are far from the only ones to be able to boast that. In fact, for ?American Idol? it?s practically a regular occurrence, with Jessica Sanchez and fellow ?Idol? alum De Andre Brackensick being the show?s latest love connection. Engaged couple Brendan Villegas and Rachel Reilly met on ?Big Brother,? which is known for its frequent ?showmances.? Even ?Dancing With the Stars? can claim pro-and-partner matches, as well as pro-and-pro ones, over the course of the show?s seasons. But romances rarely seem to last in the ballroom bash.

Are you surprised by the unlikely places couples find love on reality TV? Share your thoughts about the romance-themed shows vs. the shows that actually lead to more romances on our Facebook page.

Maine filmmaker chats with younger version of self

(AP) ? A video created by a Maine filmmaker that shows him talking to a younger version of himself thanks to creative editing is making its way across the Internet.

Jeremiah McDonald of Portland put together VHS footage of himself when he was 12 years old and juxtaposed it with a video of himself as a 32-year-old actor and filmmaker, creating a conversation between the two that's both snarky and nostalgic.

Posted on YouTube on Thursday, it had received more than 1.6 million views within 24 hours.

The video shows the modern McDonald sipping booze while talking to his squirmy younger self about his cartoon drawings as a child, a Star Wars action figure, their pets, the Internet and the British science fiction TV show "Doctor Who."

Rising carbon dioxide in atmosphere also speeds carbon loss from forest soils

ScienceDaily (July 10, 2012) ? Elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide accelerate carbon cycling and soil carbon loss in forests, new research led by an Indiana University biologist has found.

The new evidence supports an emerging view that although forests remove a substantial amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, much of the carbon is being stored in living woody biomass rather than as dead organic matter in soils.

Richard P. Phillips, lead author on the paper and an assistant professor of biology in the IU College of Arts and Sciences, said that after nearly two decades of research on forest ecosystem responses to global change, some of the uncertainty has been lifted about how forests are storing carbon in the wake of rising carbon dioxide levels.

"It's been suggested that as trees take up more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, a greater amount of carbon will go to roots and fungi to acquire nutrients, but our results show that little of this carbon accumulates in soil because the decomposition of root and fungal detritus is also increased," he said.

Carbon stored in soils, as opposed to in the wood of trees, is desirable from a management perspective in that soils are more stable over time, so carbon can be locked away for hundreds to thousands of years and not contribute to atmospheric carbon dioxide increases.

The research was conducted at the Duke Forest Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment site in North Carolina. At this site, mature loblolly pine trees were exposed to increased levels of carbon dioxide for 14 years, making it one of the longest-running carbon dioxide enrichment experiments in the world. Researchers were able to calculate the age of the carbon cycling through the soil by growing roots and fungi into mesh bags that contained uniquely labeled soils. The soils were then analyzed for their organic composition. The authors also report that nitrogen cycled faster in this forest as the demand for nutrients by trees and microbes became greater under elevated CO2.

"The growth of trees is limited by the availability of nitrogen at this site, so it makes sense that trees are using the 'extra' carbon taken up under elevated CO2 to prime microbes to release nitrogen bound up in organic matter," Phillips said. "What is surprising is that the trees seem to be getting much of their nitrogen by decomposing root and fungal detritus that is less than a year old."

The two-fold effects of microbial priming, where microbes are stimulated to decompose old soil organic matter via an increase in new carbon and other energy sources, and the faster turnover of recently fixed root and fungal carbon, are enough to explain the rapid carbon and nitrogen cycling that is occurring at the Duke Forest FACE site.

"We call it the RAMP hypothesis -- Rhizo-Accelerated Mineralization and Priming -- and it states that root-induced changes in the rates of microbial processing of carbon and nitrogen are key mediators of long-term ecosystem responses to global change," Phillips added.

"Most ecosystem models have limited representations of roots, and none of them include processes such as priming. Our results demonstrate that interactions between roots and soil microbes play an underappreciated role in determining how much carbon is stored and how fast nitrogen is cycled. So including these processes in models should lead to improved projections of long-term carbon storage in forests in response to global environmental change'" he said.

Funding for this work was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Energy. Phillips and his research team in March received a $398,000 National Science Foundation grant to fund testing of the RAMP hypothesis in mixed hardwood forests of Indiana.

Illinois, union debate prison incidents

SPRINGFIELD ? As Illinois prison officials grapple with shrunken budgets, overcrowding and the governor?s plans to close some facilities, they also are dealing with disturbing reports of recent violence in state prisons that have injured guards and an inmate, and a case where two prisoners reportedly overdosed on heroin, The Associated Press has learned.

Among the incidents in the past six weeks, a Stateville Correctional Center inmate was stabbed nine times in a dispute and an inmate stabbed a guard at another maximum-security lockup in Pontiac, according to Department of Corrections information and interviews after the AP received tips.

Prison workers and their union believe the incidents represent an uptick of trouble inside Illinois penitentiaries, which many say have been overcrowded and understaffed for years.

Some cite the incidents to bolster the case against Gov. Pat Quinn?s plan to close the Tamms supermax prison in far southern Illinois, which is reserved for troublemakers from other prisons. Lawmakers critical of the governor have predicted that taking away the Tamms threat will embolden instigators of violence and gang leaders.

State corrections officials reject any connection between the Tamms decision and behavior in other lockups, and insist the prison population can be managed safely and securely. But the incidents also worry prison reform advocates, including some who support the closing of Tamms for other reasons.

?People are stressed. Inmates are stressed. Staff is stressed,? said John Maki, executive director of the John Howard Association, a prison watchdog group. ?If the governor is going to close facilities, it needs to be coupled with significant reform to reduce the prison population.?

The state could not immediately produce statistics to show whether the half dozen incidents represent an increase. Union officials said they are trying to compile their own numbers.

Following up on tips, the AP turned up a number of violent or drug-related incidents in the past six weeks, including a June 3 incident where two inmates at the maximum-security Menard prison in far southern Illinois attacked a guard, an incident first reported by the (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan.

Trying to publicize the incidents no doubt might help the campaign to keep Tamms open, raising questions about how to punish disorderly inmates with no threat of Tamms isolation.

But the AP was notified of a number of previously unreported incidents by sources other than AFSCME officials, who were initially unaware themselves of some of the cases.

Anders Lindall, a spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents most corrections workers, said the union is trying to catalogue all recent assaults because of ?the administration?s troubling failure to acknowledge the seriousness of these threats? while Quinn moves forward with plans to close Tamms, a women?s prison at Dwight and three halfway houses.

The state has taken some steps to reduce prison population. Quinn recently signed a law creating a new program for releasing well-behaved inmates early. He halted a similar program in 2009 after reports that it was being used to shuffle prisoners out within weeks.

The loss of that early-release option had worsened crowding ? there are 48,369 inmates in a system designed for about 33,000 ? and some experts warned that Illinois could get entangled in a California-style lawsuit forcing an inmate population reduction.

Kayce Ataiyero, a Corrections spokeswoman, pointed out the prison population is down from just over 49,000 last fall ?and we believe that the current population can be managed safely and securely.? She declined to comment on whether Corrections? projections that the population will hit 49,000 again by January 2013 are still accurate. Those projections were made in April.

?The Department?s primary focus has been and will continue to be the safe and secure operation of the prisons,? Ataiyero said. ?There is absolutely no connection between the announcement of the closure of Tamms and inmate behavior or the occurrence of incidents in the other prisons.?

There are 44 hours, 30 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

After Aung San Suu Kyi, girl band symbolizes a changing Myanmar?

Since Myanmar (Burma) formally ended military rule in March 2011, getting an interview with long-detained opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi has been a sort of rite-of-passage for foreign journalists visiting here.

The Nobel Laureate?s recent winning of a seat in Myanmar's Army-dominated parliament and current high-profile European tour are being taken as further signs that the government is maintaining its reform drive.

But there are other signals that the country is changing for the better. And with those changes come new items on the visiting journalist's to-do checklist.

Over the past year, the Me N Ma Girls (hoping there's no need to explain the obvious pun on the country's name), a pop/dance act made up of five young Myanmar singers and dancers, have appeared frequently in the international media.

?We appreciate all the media who interview us,? says Ah Moon, a 21-year-old singer and dancer from war-torn Kachin state in the country's north. She recently finished a Russian language degree and speaks fluent English with an Americanized twang.

Successive stories have branded the ladies as emblems of cultural change and taboo-lifting in what was one of the world's most oppressive political regimes. The girls, perhaps wise beyond their years, seem wary of being typecast as some sort of cultural fable or clich?, rather than aspiring pop superstars in their own right.

?Yeah, we've been in a lot of articles, it's been great,? says Kimi, 24, an ethnic Chin from the northwest of Myanmar. ?But, sometimes it's like 'can we practice now?'" the girls say, feigning good-humored weariness, while gathered around a laptop in Ah Moon's family apartment in Yangon.?

In between pouting and posing for photos, and gossiping in Myanmar language, the girls peer over the shoulder of band member Htike Htike, a graphic designer in her spare time, while she works on a new album cover design. "I did the cover for our first album," she says.

The pay-off from all the coverage is a chance to go to Los Angeles later this year to record some tracks for the new album and take a shot at making that apparent quantum leap that has so far been too much for most Asian pop acts trying to break into Western markets.

?It has been very hard for Asian acts to score in the West, but they have a chance because the story is compelling, they look great, and have the right disposition for success,? says Daniel Hubbert, Chairman/CEO of Powermusic, in an e-mail.

When the girls head stateside, they'll record at Mr. Hubbert's studio. Musically, he says, ?I would categorize the girls as a pop/dance act, musically akin to a Pussy Cat Dolls.?

If that's the case, then the Me N Ma Girls have as good a shot as anyone at making the East-West leap.

After all, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, possibly the most famous Myanmar citizen, has been described as an ideal link between East and West, an Asian Buddhist speaking the Queen's English and the language of democracy and rule of law and who raised a family in Britain.

?She is like another mother for us,? says Cha Cha, 22, also an actress with 14 movies already released, speaking of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The country's reformist President Thein Sein comes in for hearty praise too. Wai Hnin, the quietest of the five girls, chimes in. ?Thein Sein is amazing,? she says, ?everything is changing now here after the end of the military government.?

The girls aren't getting too big for their boots or forgetting their roots, however, despite their success to date and hopes for the future. "We don't try to be too sexy, or go too far from our culture," says Ah Moon, adding that "we all still love our traditional dress."

Nexus Q hackery continues as root is obtained, launchers and apps get up and running

Nexus Q

When Google unveiled the Nexus Q, they said they welcomed hacking on the social streamer and some in the development community took that as an open challenge to see what all they could make it do. Here we are now, Google I/O all over and done with for another year and some amazing things are happening in the Nexus Q world.

Over at XDA, there is now instructions on how to unlock the bootloader, root it, load custom images onto it and even load up launchers and some apps. A video has been created to show off the hacks, you'll find it below but for now it remains something not for the faint of heart. That said, in the video you'll see some Netflix up and running and plenty of other apps like GMail getting some love. If this thing starts to open up a bit more, would it change your mind on picking one up?

(AP) ? The Brits know how to stage a coronation, and they'll do so Sunday for either regal Roger Federer or one of their own, Andy Murray.

Queen Elizabeth II has another commitment, but the former Kate Middleton and the British prime minister will be on hand to see who reigns at Wimbledon.

Plenty of history will be written in the men's final at tennis' most tradition-rich tournament. Federer can add to his record 16 Grand Slam championships, and he would tie a record by winning Wimbledon for a seventh time. He also would claim the ATP's top ranking for the first time since June 2010, and match Pete Sampras' record of 286 weeks at No. 1.

"There's a lot on the line for me," Federer said.

Murray, meanwhile, is merely trying to become the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Perry took Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships in 1936.

"It has been a great tournament so far," Murray said. "I've just got to try to keep it together for the final."

Britain's abuzz. Even without the queen, the Royal Box is certain to be packed, along with the rest of Centre Court. Tickets are going for more than 2,600 pounds ($4,000). Thousands have bought 8-pound ($12.40) grounds passes to picnic near Wimbledon's practice courts on the grassy hill known these days as Murray Mount, watching the match on a huge video screen.

Loyalties will be divided. Brits love Federer, the celebrated Swiss whose graceful game is so well suited to the All England Club. He'll receive sentimental support because he has endured a reign delay, going 2? years without a major title while being eclipsed by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Now, at 30, he could become the first thirtysomething man to win Wimbledon since Arthur Ashe in 1975.

Allegiance for the stolid Murray is more a matter of geography, and even then it's complicated. He's a native of Scotland, where there's a campaign afoot to break away from Britain. Whenever Murray loses, the English tend to call him Scottish, not British.

But for the moment, when it comes to lawn tennis, the United Kingdom is united.

Brits invented the game and, in 1877, started Wimbledon. They've won the men's title 35 times, more than any other country, but not since before World War II. And no British woman has won Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Londoners have accepted the championship drought with good humor, especially where Murray is concerned. Waitresses at restaurants in Wimbledon village roll their eyes at the mention of his name. Last Sunday at the village's Emmanuel Church, when the pastor noted from the pulpit that Brits are rooting for Murray, the congregation responded with groans and giggles.

It doesn't help that he has been beaten in the semifinals each of the past three years, nor that he has lost every set in his three Grand Slam finals, including against Federer at the 2008 U.S. Open and 2010 Australian Open.

A breakthrough victory came Friday versus Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, making the 25-year-old Murray the first British man to reach the final since Bunny Austin in 1938.

"People have been talking for 10 years that finally he was going to be the one to do it," three-time Wimbledon champion John McEnroe said. "There were starting to be questions. He shut that talk down. It's rather amazing, because some people were starting to wonder, including myself, whether this day would actually come."

A part-time resident of Miami, Murray said he draws inspiration from Miami Heat star LeBron James, who was much maligned before winning his first NBA title last month.

Murray has also benefited from the help of Ivan Lendl, his coach since the start of the year. Lendl lost the first four Grand Slam finals he played, then won eight major titles.

The Scotsman speaks in a mumbling monotone, and on court he tends to go about his business like a condemned man. At the French Open in May, Wade described him as "a drama queen."

But while Murray's no Federer when it comes to style, some find appeal in his broad repertoire of shots.

"I love watching Andy play, because I think it's so exciting," said Serena Williams, who won her fifth women's title Saturday. "You never know what he's going to do. He's running every ball down. He looks tired, and then he comes back. I think it's awesome. He's really one of my favorite people to watch. If that's being a drama queen, it's really exciting."

Murray's accustomed to carrying the weight of a skeptical country's hopes. Shouts from the stands of "Come on, Andy" have been common for years at Wimbledon, and are occasionally heard at matches where Murray's not even a contestant.

"There is obviously a lot of pressure and stress around this time of year," he said.

There will also be pressure on Federer, who's mindful of his place in history. He beat defending champion Djokovic on Friday to reach the final for the first time since 2009, and now he has a chance to tie the tournament record of seven titles set in the 1880s by William Renshaw ? an Englishman ? and tied in 2000 by Sampras.

"It's a big match for me, and I hope I can keep my nerves," Federer said. "I'm sure I can."

Like London bookmakers and most other observers, Sampras considers Federer the favorite.

"But if Andy serves well and gets aggressive and can get the crowd behind him and use a little bit of destiny, he can pull it off," said Sampras, speaking by phone from his home in Los Angeles. "Too bad it's on at 5 in the morning. I'm going to have to TiVo it."
